Tips on Chip Shots

The chip shot is one of the easiest to learn in the game. Yet, many recreational players have trouble hitting the short chip shot, even after several golf instruction sessions. In fact, they’re so bad, they substitute their putter for wedge, which isn’t always wise, as I explain in my golf lessons.

Using a putter when you need a pitching wedge or a sand wedge is, needless to say, a poor decision. It can add strokes to your overall score or cost you a hole in match play. It’s a problem you must overcome to lower your golf handicap. If you can’t hit a short chip shot well, don’t despair. There’s help.

The inability to hit a short chip shot is as much mental as physical. To overcome these obstacles, you need to simplify both your mental approach and your physical technique. The next time you have a short chip shot, try using an 8 iron instead of a wedge. It’s an approach I sometimes use myself. That’s because it works.

Here are 6 keys to chipping as if you were putting that I recommend in my golf lessons:

• Replace your wedge with an 8 iron
• Take a normal putting stance
• Place hands and weight forward
• Hold the club vertically
• Hit the ball off the toe-end of the clubface
• Rock your shoulders to control roll of ball

First, set-up as if your were going to make a long putt. Use your normal putting grip and play the ball back in your stance, off the inside of the heel of your back foot. The 8 iron is ideal for this type of shot because it’s short enough to deloft without the club’s shaft hitting you during the shot.

Also, keep your hands and weight forward, favoring your front side, as you would if you were hitting a chip shot. Hold the club vertically, so that the club’s heel is raised off the ground, enabling you to stand closer to the ball. And spread your elbows

Moving the ball back in your stance and shifting your weight forward positions the ball off the toe-end of the clubhead when you hit it. Using the toe-end will deaden the ball when you make contact. It will also help control the ball’s roll.

Hit the ball with a gentle rocking of the shoulders, as you would if you were putting. This technique raises the club several inches off the ground in the backswing and forces you to hit down on the ball slightly, chipping it into the air. Concentrate on maintaining the width of the gap between your elbows as you swing thorough. It also ensures a pure arms-and-shoulders motion.

Using the 8-iron approach takes your wrists out of play. Recreational golfers who have trouble making short chip shots often have overly active wrists. With my approach, you’ll eliminate your wrists yet still strike the ball solidly-just keep your head still and focus on making a short, firm follow-through,

You can also use my approach for longer chip shots. Just lengthen your stroke to play the longer shot, as you would if you were hitting a long putt. For extra long chip shots, try using a 5 or 6 iron to get the required roll.

Chip under Target Drill
The key to accurate chipping is keeping the ball low so it runs like a putt when it hits the ground. Here’s a drill I use in my golf lessons designed to teach players to keep the ball low.

Lay a club or bag horizontally across two baskets placed about three feet apart. Then, step back a few feet and try chipping under the obstacle toward the hole, using either a wedge or an 8 iron.

To chip under the obstacle, you must deloft the club, which you can do by keeping your hands ahead of the clubhead when you swing. Having a visual obstacle to hit the ball under forces you to develop your ability to keep the ball low. Keep practicing this shot until it becomes second nature

Hitting the short chip shot well-whether you use a wedge or an 8 iron- is a start toward improving your short game, and chopping strokes of your golf handicap. And aren’t those the real goals?

Football is one of the most physically demanding sports an individual can play. You have to be able to move quickly, think fast, run hard and fast over long distances, all while trying to avoid be crunched by guys from the other team. With all the physical work that is involved in football, it’s not hard to understand why endurance plays such a key role in any football player’s training regimen. Improving your endurance will allow you to stay in the game longer. Improving your endurance will also enable you to give your team your very best efforts without you being too tired to be a team player.

Each and every player that is on the team should make it a priority and a goal to have better and longer lasting endurance. If one player doesn’t have the stamina to make it through a game, he is a weak link, and all it takes is one weak link to destroy the success of the team. This is why improving your endurance is so important and needs to be a priority in training.

There are a lot of theories and methods for improving your endurance that you could research and put into your training program. One of the most basic elements of endurance training is long-distance running or jogging. It’s best to incorporate this technique in moderate amounts and increase the distance and time you run gradually over time to avoid injury. A lot of players train in a gym using equipment like treadmills to work on their cardiovascular training. Treadmills are great for improving your endurance because they allow you to be in complete control of how many miles you run and how steep the incline for your run is so that you can decide how intense you want your workout.

Another great tip for improving your endurance is to do interval training. Football is a game that is played in intense bursts of energy with a lot of stops and pauses in between plays. This is why it can be very effective to train your endurance in intervals as well. It helps you to avoid overworking your body and at the same time prepares you for game day. The level of your performance during the intense burst is what needs to be examined during the training, along with how well you recover.

It’s important to note that while you’re improving your endurance, you’ll need to make sure you are taking in the nutrients that your body requires in order to achieve the results you are desiring. When participating in an endurance training program, you’ll need to increase your carbohydrate intake to replace the glycogen your body loses while you’re training. You will also want to increase the amount of protein you’re getting daily as well.

These are just a few helpful hints for improving your endurance. Improving your endurance will help give you the edge you need as an individual player to give your all in the game.

Assuming that in a match day where there are packed with eventful matches. 10 Core Tips for Coaching Youth Flag Football

The main difference between adult sports and kids’ games is that you should always remember that the kids sports are not as serious and results-oriented as adult games. You, the coach, and the kids should do it more for the fun of it. Aiming for the gold or winning should be a goal as long as you do not cheat or indulge in unfair practices just for the sake of it.


American culture is competitive, but there’s no call to instill in children the mindset that winning is everything. There are also other things to think about, such as sportsmanship and respect for the other players.


Too often, our children are fed the wrong messages by the media. They see players in fisticuffs, yelling and screaming at the referee, and other such actions; they read articles and listen to and watch commentaries that tell them that violence and cheating for the sake of winning are normal and acceptable.


Often the coach must undo, in practice and on the field, what hours of exposure to these messages do to children. Look around you: adults have disorganized the world enough with their selfish attitudes and disingenuous explanations. Do you honestly want to help pass this down to the next generation?


Teach the kids to accept victory with magnanimity and defeat graciously. The old saying “It’s not whether you win or lose; it’s how you played the game” should be emphasized. You probably already shake hands with the opposing coaching staff after a game, so try having your members thank the opposing team after the game, no matter who won.


Dissuade them from showboating, but don’t go so far as to totally stop acknowledging the good things individuals do – a little attaboy after a fourth touchdown, or an excellent block, is never out of line. Just don’t promote individuals so much that they start acting like they’re better than their team mates. This is demoralizing and disruptive.


As a coach you should inspire your members to give their best and work well with other team members to achieve the team’s goals. You are a role model for the children under your wing, like it or not. What you do impresses them more powerfully than what you say. So always carry yourself accordingly. Strive to emphasize sportsmanship, character, and trust.


Have a Plan


Always plan and think of your goals for the team. Discuss this with your team members. Take into consideration the strengths and weaknesses of each team member. The ages and sex of the members may vary and this should be carefully analyzed by the coach to maximize advantages and minimize the disadvantages. At their times of growth, not all boys and girls are going to develop at the same way or at the same rate.


Warm Up


Warm-up exercises before playing are very important. Some stretching and muscle exercises must be standard procedure before a game. This will ensure less injuries and more agility on the part of the players. They will become better prepared and stay focused as they move on into the game. It also gives them time to adjust from whatever it was that they were doing before – time to settle into the grove of playing team sports.


Keep It Simple


Remember to make your demonstrations of the skills or techniques simple for the kids to follow. Don’t try to cram too much information in one session. Demonstrations should not look complicated or time-consuming. Nor should they be boring; if you notice your team members’ attentions wandering while you’re talking, it’s time to either take a different tack on the subject or go do something else.


Practice! Practice! Practice!


Practice ensures mastery of techniques and skills. It also helps boost the kid’s confidence as they become more familiar with certain moves.


Be Flexible


Always be ready with alternatives should your main plans falter. Maybe doing something differently at that time is the order of the day.


Get Yourself an Assistant


Generals have lots of staff. The President has a whole Cabinet full of them. You’re a general of sorts too, aren’t you? Why don’t you have even one?


You’re not superhuman. It helps if you have someone help you do your job as coach. This would leave you free to concentrate on your players since you wouldn’t have to think about setting the equipment up at the same time. It can also be a lifesaver in emergencies to have another adult around.


Show Respect for Your Players


Don’t be too dictatorial. Be sensitive to the children’s limitations and emotions. Even if they look up to you for guidance and support, you must value their opinions and understand your players’ different personalities. Never humiliate a player publicly. Never corner a player until he or she has no option but to go through you.


If you’re explaining a play, ask them questions like, “What’s the reason for this?” or “Is there anything we should watch out for when trying this out?” The fact that you’re asking them reinforces their self-esteem and makes them feel like they’re an important part of your football team.


Maintain Discipline


Agree on the rules for discipline. Setting this early can lead to a more organized practice not just for one meeting but for the rest of the season. Earn and engage the kid’s respect so they will stay focused on the game and not engage in disruptive activities. If one team is practicing plays, the other players can be doing drills while waiting for their turn. This keeps everyone busy and prevents boredom. Have the assistant supervise one group while you coach the other.


Learn to Differentiate between Normal Roughhousing and Malicious Behavior


There’s no hard and fast rule to this, but call the member aside and talk to them if you feel it’s necessary. Don’t use exercise as a punitive measure. Benching them is more effective, as this deprives them of the chance to participate in the activity that they’re supposed to be engaging in.


Following these tips will assist you in creating a positive coaching environment for your team.

So there is this one guy who you think could be the one. He has all the qualities that you are looking for and you really think that your mother would approve and you r dad can actually befriend him. Oh and your older brother will not reject him, either. And let us say this guy is already a friend or a co-worker that you do not exactly hang around with but is an easy to talk to acquaintance. And you want to get to know him better and hopefully start something romantic between the two of you. Well, worry your pretty head about it no more. Here are some tips on how to ask him out without coming on too strong or being cheap and being mistaken as easy.

# First, start off with easy small talk and try to find a common ground and then casually ask him if he’d like to grab a cup of coffee with you some time to chat more about that hobby you both share or that movie you both liked as kids, etc. How to ask him out should start as simple and casual. And there can never be anything simpler and more casual than grabbing a cup of coffee with a friend. It is not a date per se, but at least it will give you the privacy and freedom as well as space to get to know him and vice versa.

# And of course there are those friendly parties that you could ask him to attend with you. It would be a lot easier if there would also be people there that he would know, so he would not feel too restricted and it will relax him even more. You can socialize and catch a few minutes talking and getting to know each other. This is also a great opportunity to see him in the company of people he is friendly with. So a party where common friends are present is another great idea on how to ask him out.

# Another effective technique on how to ask him out is by doing a little research on your part and find out what it is he is interested in. Does he like movies? If that is so, what kind? Does he like watching basket ball games? Perhaps you can invite him when there is a game o n in the stadium.

# Plan an activity that focuses on his interests. This will give him a signal that you are sharing what his likes are and is game with it. And he will start being more comfortable around you and who knows what will happen after then? After trying these tips, then you should stand back and let him do his part. By this time, you have laid all your cards down and had made your intentions clear. How to ask him out? It is easy, and would guarantee you favorable results as long as you keep on being honest and showing him the real you.

Passing Tips for Youth Football Quarterbacks

Every youth football player, no matter what their regular position is, should learn to throw a spiral with accuracy. It’s a crucial component of the game and one never knows when an opportunity to make a spectacular passing play may come along.

For the youth football quarterback, these tips need to be practiced over and over again to gain passing proficiency. The Grip for Throwing a Perfect Spiral

It can be difficult for young football players to get a good grip on the football as their hands may not be large enough. That doesn’t preclude them from learning the proper technique with some slight modifications.

•    The football should be gripped lightly with the fingertips and not rest in the palm of the hand. The light grip allows for increased ball control. This can be a problem for younger players with small hands where there is no choice but to use the palm.

•    It’s important to place your index finger on the seam to put a “spin” or spiral on the football upon release. Don’t force the spin; let it roll naturally off the fingers.  Trying to over spin the ball is a common mistake.

•    As you step back in the pocket, hold the football next to your ear as you look for your target. The ball will be cradled in the “U” between thumb and index finger.

The Release Technique for Spiral Passes

Practice throwing spiral passes with this release technique at 50% of your throwing capacity until you perfect it. You can then start increasing your velocity as you begin to master the skill.

•    Keeping your eye on your receiver, take your arm backward and then “spring” it forward in a circular motion releasing the football at the top of the arc.

•    A good release will spin the football off the index finger as you let it go. The other fingers are used only for supporting the ball and not for putting a spiral on it.

•    As you release the football, be sure to continue with the follow through for spin and accuracy.

Passing Accuracy in Football

Now that you’ve mastered the spiral pass you have to work on hitting your target. Many football recruiters list passing accuracy as the primary passing skill when selecting potential quarterbacks. A perfect spiral is of no use if it’s bouncing along the field, or worse, in the arms of an opposing player. Again, throw the football at about 50% velocity when performing accuracy drills. They’ll be plenty of time to work on your power once you have mastered the basics.

•    Get yourself set in your stance with your non-throwing hip pointed towards your receiver. Being “set” is crucial for accuracy and power.

•    When you are ready to pass, cock your shoulder and step towards your target when you release the football.

•    Follow through on the pass with the palm of your throwing hand facing the ground.  Here is an example video demonstration of Peyton Manning follow through on the pass.

•     Throwing an accurate spiral pass in football is not a difficult process. Repetition of basic throwing mechanics is the key along with adequate rest. Youth football players should practice these passing tips every other day to master them.
